We have two charity sew-ins planned for the first part of 2017! Our dates will be Sunday, January 22nd and Sunday, March 19th. Both will be held at the PennLake Library in Bloomington on 8800 Penn Avenue South from Noon - 5pm.

We have been very busy gatherers and quilters!  Thank you to everyone for all the fabric and block donations, quilt kits taken home and worked on, batting scraps saved and brought to the meeting. There are now many blocks to be made into quilt tops, batting pieces sewn into full bats, completed tops ready to be layered with backs,  and even a quilt or two ready to be quilted. There is something for everyone no matter your favorite step! Many hands (and machines) can make the work go quickly.  Our stash of completed quilts is growing. Soon we will be making decisions of communities to receive our donated quilts!

Please join us at one or both of the charity sew-ins for whatever time works into your schedule!

The Dakota County Star Quilters has graciously extended an invitation for us to join them for their spring guild retreat on May 19-22, 2017 at White’s Wildwood Retreat in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.  I toured this retreat location with the DCSQ retreat chair, Pat, and it is lovely, especially the Lodge that we will be staying, eating and quilting in!  Wildwood’s website is and the pictures show how truly beautiful it is!  Please check the website out for all the amenities!

From the DCSQ member newsletter:  It's about a 1 ½ hour drive from the twin cities.  The facility is set in the rolling hills and wooded countryside of Chippewa Falls, WI.  It is an absolutely beautiful property, built by the owners for craft retreats. It is a well thought out property (with space designs and needs kept in mind) and exceptionally well maintained. The lower and main level have driveways to each door, so no stairs to navigate from the outside for unloading. (There are stairs on the inside.) Meals can be on your own, or group planned; however you wish. The retreat will start at 3:30pm on Friday, and end at 3pm on Monday. Come for whatever portion of the weekend works for you! Space is limited to the first 20 who register and will cost $165 per person (due at the time of registration.) The registration form will be on the guild website shortly at Registration deadline is March 29, 2017. If the retreat is not filled by this date, the retreat will be cancelled with your fee refunded. Assuming the retreat proceeds, there are no refunds. If you need to cancel, you may find another woman to take your spot (shared bedrooms.)”

The registration form is now available on the DCSQ website.  Use the menu on the top and go to the retreat section.  Print and complete the form and mail with a check to Pat at the address listed.  Please also list that you are a MMQG member next to your name.

If you have any questions, please email either Pat at with DCSQ or Jan at with MMQG

MMQG + Dakota County Star Quilters in Modern Vintage

We have some great events coming up with the Dakota County Star Quilters!  See below for all the details -

Quilt Show - Modern Vintage
February 14 through March 11
South St. Paul Historical Society

Show hours:
Wednesday:  9am - 5pm
Thursday:     9am - 8pm
Friday:          9am - 5pm
Saturday:      10am - 3pm

There is not cost for admittance but a $5 donation to the South St. Paul Historical Society would be appreciated.

A boutique is open for visitors to shop at.  Beautiful quilts, and plenty of fabric is available for purchase.

Donate a Small Quilt (<80 inches square) to Raise Money for the Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild!
There is also a small quilt auction that visitors can bid on during the run of the show. We split the proceeds with the Dakota County Star Quilters, so please feel free to donate any small quilts to help raise money for programs in the coming year!

DCSQ have invited us to showcase our quilts in this show - we'll be the 'modern' in 'Modern Vintage!'
Please bring quilts you'd like to display (any size or pattern is welcome) to Kathy Lindstrom at our January MMQG meeting.  We'd love to have a lot of representation of all the hard work you do!  The requirements for this show are the same as the MQ show - e.g. they should have a hanging sleeve.  There is a registration form on their website for you to fill out and drop off with your quilt.

Mary Fons Lectures & Workshop:
Saturday, March 11
9am Lecture - "You Call That a Quilt?" Quilt Styles in America: Traditional, Contemporary, Studio/Art, and Modern
You'll never look at quilts the same way again. We examine the four different styles of quilts in America in all their fascinating glory. A "show-stopper" in terms of information given and "ooh-ahh" quilts to admire.

11am Lecture - 10 Things I Know About Quilting (and Life) NEW!
Mary's all grown-up. For the past eight years, Mary's been learning, teaching, failing/succeeding, creating video, designing fabric, recording TV shows, creating podcasts, lecturing, traveling, and of course, making quilts. She's learned a few things about making patchwork and teaching it -- and she's learned about life, too. Full of quilt making tips and inspiration, this funny/touching lecture is a favorite.

1pm Workshop - A Quilt Called Whisper
The Thousand Pyramid quilt is both modern and traditional. We'll learn to use the Fons & Porter 60-Degree Pyramid Ruler to cut our triangles; we'll also discuss how contrast still matters in monochrome quilts like "Whisper." Intermediate.
Fill out this form to register for Mary's events.

Hope to see you at the show and workshop!
