Block Lottery: Cookie Exchange Style Block Swap

As previously announced, the group voted for the Hot Crossed Nine Patch for our May block swap.  We will be using Sophie's tutorial for this original 9" finished block. (with permission)

The background should be a gray solid or tone on tone fabric. In the Kona brand solids, use a range between Charcoal and Steel gray.  Some options in Moda's Bella solids would be Pewter, Silver, Zen Gray or Steel.  For the Nine-Patch fabric you may use solids, tone on tone, reads as or small scale prints.  The contrast Strip please use solids or tone on tone fabrics.  As always, fabrics should be of quilt shop quality.

For 25 blocks you will need the following yardage:

  • Background: 2 yards
  • Nine-Patch Print: 7/8 yd
  • Contrast: 3/8yd
I calculated these amounts with the Kaufman Quilters Calculator and they do not include any extra so you may want to add 10-20% to allow for any mistakes.

There is one error in the tutorial... you will need a quantity of 2 of the 1.5x8" background pieces rather than one as listed.  (My requirements take that into consideration.)

Blocks will be exchanged at our May meeting.  If you would like to participate, please email me at  I am guess-timating we will have about 25 participants based on membership numbers/meeting attendances so that is why I am suggesting planning on 25 blocks.  As signups come in we can tweek that number if need be.

Please upload a sample block to the flickr group. I will try to loosely keep a tally of the colors being used.  If you know there are blocks already in our flickr group, please check out the pool to see what is needed to round out the selection.
